PEER SERVICES

Peer services are recovery-oriented, person centered, strength-based interventions that promote and aid the building of skills such as independent living, coping techniques, self-direction and general wellness. These interventions are provided by an individual who has experience with one or multiple mental health and/or substance use diagnoses, and is in recovery.

Peer Recovery Specialists are required to obtain an OhioMHAS certification and undergo specialized training in order to successfully aid the individuals they work with.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

PRINCIPLES OF PEER SUPPORT

  • Voluntary and individuals freely choose to participate.
  • Non-judgemental and my role is to meet individuals where they are, free of judgement and biases.
  • Empathetic, and I make a genuine effort to put myself in your shoes so I can support you.
  • Despite any differences, I value everyone’s uniqueness.
  • Requires honest and direct communication.
  • Speaking honestly but with compassion about difficult issues is critical to the Peer/client relationship.
  • Mutual responsibility - my role is to support you; your role is to let me know how I can do that.
  • Sharing power. You and I will collaborate and make decisions
  • Reciprocal. I learn from you as much as you learn from me.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM ME?

  • A safe space
  • Confidentiality Unless harm is indicated
  • Honesty, respect and support
